The effects of living in a heteronormative society

by: Chelsea Sanidad

Heteronormativity is an idea or concept which implies that heterosexuality is the normal and preferred sexual orientation. What do you think will happen to people who aren’t heterosexual nor cisgender if they’re living in a heteronormative society?

Being raised in a heteronormative society would give you a wrong and tainted mindset. You’d grow up thinking that being part of the LGBTQ+ community is a shame, they would make you believe that they’re less than you, and that is the root of all the discriminations towards their community. Whether you end up being part of the LGBTQ+ community or not, having this mindset would only have a negative effect on you. A lot of people may think that this mindset wouldn’t have any negative effect on them just because they’re not part of the LGBTQ+ community but that’s wrong. Having this mindset alone that discriminates against people who did nothing wrong is already a negative effect on yourself, it’s not a good thing to be a discriminative person. It’s even scary how there are individuals who go as far as to physically hurt the people who are part of this community. They think it’s fine to hurt them, they think it’s fine to make fun of them, they think it’s fine to look down on them just because they’re not what society expected them to be. Because of these, a lot of people became conscious of themselves, they became afraid to express who they really are and what they really feel even though it’s completely harmless to do so. It even causes a lot of negative things on their mental health like self-loathing and self-deprecation. Imagine having to be afraid and cautious of everything when you’re not even doing anything wrong? There’s nothing to be ashamed about in being part of the LGBTQ+ community and there’s also nothing wrong about it at all but being in a society that doesn’t even consider you as normal would make you think otherwise.
